BDO Get BACk Challenge Will Have Its Colours Flying In The 2010 FBD Rás

May 22, 2010

BDO Get BACk Challenge will have its colours flying in the 2010 FBD Insurance Rás, one of Europe’s most prestigious cycling events with teams from all over the world taking part.  The group who are known as The Edge Sports Team will be known as the BDO Get BACk Challenge Team  for the event.  The team has achieved a lot of success at national events in the build up to the race so hopefully a few podium finishes for the Get BACk colours lie ahead. The five riders are Michael Fitzgerald, Brendan and Seán Lacey, Alan Loftus and Michael O'Reilly. They are supported by manager Michael Butler, mechanic Rene van Dam, soigneur Peter Bane and masseur Keith Hadnett.

The BDO organized Get BACk Challenge is now in its fifth year of operation having starting in 2006 and is a Business Against Cancer initiative.

The top down ‘care’ approach is designed to fund palliative home care programmes run by local hospices for those unfortunate to be affected by Cancer.  The bottom up ‘preventative’ approach is funded on adopting a proactive approach to living a healthy and active lifestyle particularly among young people and counteract the growing issue of obesity and its associated problems.

The idea is that encouraging activity among kids and a healthy lifestyle will reduce their risk of contracting life threatening illnesses later in life and that they will carry through a health focus with them in life.  The principal target groups are those living in the social disadvantaged areas of the region who are most affected by the problems of obesity through a combination of a lack of sport participation opportunities.  While the acronym (Get BACk) represents a unifying theme of Business Against Cancer it also embraces the key message of getting back to exercise, looking at diet, well being, back to basics!.

It has raised €700,000 in the past 4 years and this year Greg LeMond will join us for the charity cycle for the third year in a row.  Visit www.bdo-getback.com for full details.
