The controlling body for world cycling, Union Cyclist International, has appointed one of its youngest international commissaires, Frederick Hann, as President of the College of Commissaires for the FBD MILK RAS 8 Day International Cycle Race, which starts from Dublin on Sunday 23rd May.
The College of Commissaires has the responsibility for the sporting aspect of a cycle race and work in close harmony with the event organisers. Mr. Haan will have the support of the Irish commissaires, Jack Watson, Maurice Murphy, Phil O'Brien, Michael Robb and Paul Watson.
A commissaries for seventeen years Frederick Hann was elevated to UCI Commissaire status in Vienna in 2004. A teacher and co-ordinator of an agricultural education centre Mr. Haan has officiated at many major international races such as the World Championships, Amstel Gold Race, Tour Of Holland, Olympia Tour and the Tour of Flanders.
When contacted at his home in Nieuwleusen Haan said he is "very pleased with his appointment to the FBD MILK RAS and looked forward to working with the race organisation in ensuring the success of the 2004 FBD MILK RAS.
The technical aspect of major cycle races is supervised by the race College of Commissaires,or in other sports, referees. The College is under the direction of the UCI appointed official who acts as President of the College.
The route for this year's race is expected to be announced in the near future, indications are that it will be in the best traditions of major stage races, a mix of long stages and severe mountain climbs.
